2012-2013

GCE seeks students and families who want to participate in a community dedicated to learning how to make the world a better place. GCE honors individuality, leverages creativity, and expects courage, determination and accountability. After all, there is so much to learn and so much to do.  We cannot afford to lower expectations for ourselves or others. GCE seeks to be a high school experience for a new generation of global citizens who align social and civic responsibility with their personal aspirations, academic hopes and unique gifts.

GCE hopes the following students will apply:

Brave, resilient people: Students who understand that GCE will push them to learn HOW to learn.  GCE CHicago High School provides a safe place to practice and prepare for a life of discovery  – in higher education, employment, and a range of situations in which they will need to master the unfamiliar and unknown.

Curious people. Students willing let go of their previous conceptions of high school and choose to be part of building something more personal, more engaging, more relevant, and more deeply connected.  Students who see themselves as explorers and investigators-knowing full-well that exploration sometimes means getting lost.

Gifted people, who are conscious of others, humble even. GCE can probably push students with exceptional skills and potential farther than most schools because we customize the curriculum for all kids, keeping them engaged, grounded and working at their level.

Good people with unique learning styles. As with gifted kids, GCE is a good fit for man, but not all, students who haven’t found schools where they feel validated. Our teachers learn how each and every student functions so that we can most effectively connect and guide. We provide strong social-emotional support and closely partner with families.

Good people on the cusp.  Many teenage youth are on the verge of becoming great young adults.  If you’re teetering on the fence, needing direction, exposure, and inspiration, we just might be the school to help you discover your passion, skills, and potential.

Caring people: Teenagers and families with a desire to make a positive difference in their communities and the world at large.  Team players.

GCE aims for all of our students to graduate with a sense of self-understanding, acceptance and learning strategies that they can carry with them beyond high school. We believe they all bring gifts to the community as they are on arrival simply by being who they are.

Students who won’t thrive at GCE:

Resistant people who are not open to new people and experiences. Enrolling at GCE requires a commitment from within the student to the long-term process of learning and connecting.  Real learning is not always quick or easy.

Tunnel-vision people whose concept of school is limited to getting straight A’s or being superior to peers at all costs.

Insensitive people who don’t have patience with or interest in their peers’ or others’ perspectives and ideas.

Unsafe people who will put themselves and others at risk in the classroom, on field experiences or on-line.
