GCE Institute
Professional Development: 21st Century Learning and Teaching Models
The GCE Institute offers three types of Professional Development — Immersion Training, PD Residencies, and Customized Workshops. In all three cases, the purpose is the same: we search for the essence of why and how learning happens. We apply our discoveries to the practice of curriculum design and instruction; and we invite educators, from all fields, to share in the process with us.
Through GCE’s Immersion Training, we develop Master Learners, highly trained educators who design and customize curriculum to meet the needs of unique students and learning environments. Master Learners participate in more than 350 hours of professional development per year, including collaborative peer coaching and evaluation. Master Learners are Certified to design GCE courses that are tested and refined in our laboratory, GCE Chicago HS. Guest educators are invited to participate in and/or facilitate workshops at GCE throughout the summer and school-year.
PD Residencies are 3-10 day programs designed for educators who wish to learn at GCE, with our staff, and with the specific intent to implement key elements of GCE’s model. PD Residents — educators from partner schools and organizations — focus on one, two, three, or all elements of the GCE Model for Learning. PD takes place on-site, at GCE, and participants select a reinforcement plan that is delivered in-person, online, or both. PD Residents select programs that include one, two, or all of the elements that follow:
- City2Classroom
- Blended learning
- Inquiry & Project-based Instruction
- Integrated curriculum design
- Participatory Leadership & Systems Design
Customized workshops may also be designed for your unique learning community. These workshops take place at your facility, or at your desired location, and invite a stimulating investigation into WHY you do what you do and HOW you do it. Workshops may focus exclusively on one aspect of your operations — i.e. curriculum design, blended learning, or field experience — and they may also address large-scale learning system design, strategic planning, and execution.
In the event that you cannot participate in GCE’s Immersion Trainings, PD Residencies, or Customized Workshops, please note that we also present at conferences around the country. Please email to inquire about a specific conference.
If you are interested in learning more about what is included in each of these PD programs or in registering for Immersion Training, a PD Residency, or a Customized Workshop, please call 312.643.0979 or email eric@gcechicago.com. Thank you.
