Curriculum Scope & Sequence
GCE Year 1: A Model for Learning
The overarching GCE curriculum goal in year 1 is to expose students to the GCE Model for Learning – honing one’s executive functioning skills, generating meaningful guiding questions, identifying resources, doing research, exploring Chicago on foot and public transit, accessing the world through neighborhood journeys and web-based travel, and beginning one’s GCE Awareness Project. In short, Year 1 is all about helping students learn HOW to learn and HOW to effectively interact with the world.
GCE Year 2: Depth, Exposure, and Research
GCE Learning Units in year 2 continue students’ exploration of the GCE model for learning but with increased depth, and with the addition of a year-long financial literacy course and two Career Exposures (Non-profit and Corporate).
GCE Year 3: Developing Your Passion
GCE Learning Units in year 3 allow students to really dive into their passions through increased elective courses and two more Career Exposures (Government and Trade). In addition, 3rd year students benefit from Standardized Test Preparation and College Essay guidance.
GCE Year 4: Capstone Project/Senior Thesis
GCE Learning Units come to a close at the end of the first semester, year 4. The second semester is dedicated to each student’s capstone project. GCE students complete their core-subject course-work and, in addition, they perform an intensive independent study that culminates in a high-level thesis/project.
